I've recently seen somebody use the "toe" tool in Nuke, which lifts the black levels but unlike the lift value in the color corrector it has a soft roll-off. I haven't used it enough to judge its usefulness but it looked neat so I've packaged it into a Fusion macro. I've also added a black point correction (opposite of "lift") which I use quite often.

To match black levels of a foreground object and a background plate, proceed like this: Use the black point picker to pick the darkest color of your foreground element (disable this tool temporarily or pick from an upstream tool so you don't pick the result of your color correction). Then use the toe picker and pick the darkest color of your background plate.

It depends on whether you want to match a Fg to a Bg (for example CG to a life action plate) or the other way around (CG background to a green screen foreground).
Hm.. I should call the second one "Toe" instead of "Lift" I guess :-)
