In the training classes I teach I discovered a lot of artists didn't even know there was an XY Path modifier in Fusion. We improved the modifier a fair bit in Fusion 6 too - it's cleaner, more functional, and now the tracker can use it too. So we've got a new short video this week, covering the XY Path modifier in general, and how to set it as the default for tracking in Fusion 6.

Thanks! That's another quick and useful video! I never thought that you could use the shape box in the spline editor to taper the animation curve like that :mf_laughbounce2:
Plus, I enjoy those fifteen minutes of fame for my Convert to XY Path script :-) Does it ship with Fu6? cool.

Hrm. It's been in my script list for so long, I forgot it wasn't standard. If you don't mind us distributing it, I'll have to slip it into the next build. It's useful enough to be standard. :-)

Sure, go ahead. But it's "AS IS" :-)

Hmm, that one was an AddMix of my own creation, but looking over yours it would seem to be the same :-).

Yes, the video is two days late this week. I grovel for forgiveness. We had a
last minute permissions problem with one of the videos (excuses, excuses) and
I needed a last minute replacement. The good news is, that made me dig out
some old hard drives, where I unearthed some gems from IBC 2008. In particular
I found this awesome recording of Sven Neve from the House of
Secrets demonstrating a Fusion 5.3 shot they created as part of a re-branding
campaign for television station NL3.

Sven actually showed a total of 4 awesome shots, so you will likely hear his
voice again later this year.

As a teaser for next week, mad genius / product specialist Robert Zeltsch came
up with a nice approach to sub surface scattering in Fusion 6. It's a two
parter, and I'll be releasing both videos and the example compositions next
Monday. I have them all ready to go, so I can hit the publish button just
before I jump in the car and drive off to New Orleans for Siggraph!

Speaking of New Orleans, Whenever possible I'll be recording the booth demos this year, and so
far we have great demonstrations planned from Frantic Films, Worldwide
Effects, and Anatomical Travelogue (thanks guys!). I'll make sure the
recordings all make it to the YouTube channel as quickly as possible so
everyone can see what's new, even if you can't make it down to the Big Easy
for Siggraph this year.

Hey Isaac, its a really cool initiative you have with the youtube videos. I think its a phenomenal idea to be precise.

Isaac, what did you use for recording the demos? A camera or capture software? Sven's demo looks really good with a nice framerate.

That was recorded and edited with Techsmith's Camtasia Studio Recorder. IBC 2008 was the first time I tried it on stage during a live demo, and I had been afraid that it would slow the system down too much and interfere with the artists. There was a slowdown, but it wasn't terrible, and the results are very nice indeed.

Camtasia does look great. Too bad it's $299. I'll have to make (and sell) quite a lot of tutorials to make that back. Although apparently they now have 'Jing' a free or $14.95 a year for the Pro version, screencapture program. I'll give that a try for quick tutorials and see how that looks.

I'm sorry, but some of us just aren't that quick in Fusion! I think you could take a little more time to explain stuff more clearly. I'm still scratching my head after the 5th play of some of these videos.

That was a live demo, though. You'd need to have some more accompanying information to go along with it if you wanted a more detailed breakdown. Isaac's limited the videos to just 5 min in length, so they'll never be more than either an overview of a complex setup or a detailed explanation of a simple one.

This weeks video is actually two videos, because product specialist Robert Zeltsch needed a bit more than 10 minutes to show you his nifty technique for simulating subsurface scatter in Fusion 6. Subsurface scatter? It's a way of describing the behavior of light when it passes through semi-translucent materials, such as skin.

The first video shows you how to assemble the components that make up the shader - diffuse, lightwrap, backlight specular and reflection. The second video shows you how to assemble the components to create the wax material for a lit candle. Both videos come with examples you can download here

subsurface_scattering.zip (5, 419Kb)

Also explains the behaviour of 3D normal mapping. Very interesting.
